Is Joan Collins the future face of old age?

Comments

What does an old person look like? Is it Joan Collins, feted for looking unfeasibly sassy and sexy at 80, in a figure-hugging frock?

Is it frail ninetysomething couple Roy and Glenys Smith who threw themselves off a Bournemouth tower block rather than face a bleak future in a care home?

Or is the reality of 21st century old age already foreshadowed in the faces of the current generation of 30-year-olds, who will have to work until their 70th year in order to replenish the nation’s dwindling pension pot?

The slightly unsatisfactory answer is “all of the above”, because, much as policy makers try to lump “the old” into a single mass, they are no easier to generalise about than any other demographic.

Not that it bothers politicos, who constantly bang on about “the problem” of the elderly, the “ticking time bomb” of ageing parents and grandparents and the “drain on the NHS” they represent.

The anatomy of a marriage

05 Dec 2013

No wonder, given the fear and resentment they generate, that older people are shocked to discover what a low status they occupy in society while the rest of us bury our heads in the children’s sandpit.

But intimations of mortality force us to confront the future. Both my parents are long gone, but a friend and neighbour in her early seventies who is as clever, articulate and busy as ever she was, despairs of the way in which her date of birth militates against her when it comes to health care.

Serious conditions routinely go un-investigated, life-limiting symptoms are dismissed as age-related niggles. On several occasions it was only by sheer weight of personality and repeated visits that she wore down her GP into referring her on to a consultant for treatment.

It seems to have been forgotten that she worked all her life, paid her taxes and is a valued and valuable member of her community.

People like me – old enough to know better but just about young enough to defer proper planning – still aren’t facing up to the facts of old age.

I’m no spendthrift, yet I never quite feel I can afford the lavish private pension contributions necessary to ensure a decent retirement, an inaction which is wrong-headed and plain stupid.

But there’s (perceived) safety in numbers and I know an awful lot of fortysomething parents acting as though old age won’t happen to them.

What’s bonkers is that women of my vintage worry constantly about the superficial indicators of age; the sleep-creased countenance gazing back at us from the bathroom mirror every morning constantly surprises.

Grey hairs are a source of dismay. A new wrinkle is a cause for out-and-out mourning; I’m genuinely starting to feel quite piqued that so much collagen is wasted on the young.

And don’t even get me started on the prohibitive price of dentistry; still, when my children ask why there’s no slush fund for university, I can give them a lovely smile with all my own teeth, maintained at cripplingly expensive cost.

I’m not alone in buying rejuvenating serums when I ought to be investing in annuities and placing my hard-earned cash in pensions.

Looking and feeling young doesn’t mean we are young, which sounds grim, but only because old age is a burden not a release to those unable to heat the house.

I’m not sure what will give us the collective jolt to face the facts. Having assumed I’d have to work until I dropped, the Government may as well raise the pension age to 80, as in my case it’s purely academic.

My concern is more this: will anyone will want to employ ladies d’un certain age?

Ironically, that means that we’ll have to pump our pension money into fillers and stem-cell injections. We can’t all age like Joan Collins, but I have a terrible feeling it won’t stop us trying.

Nothing beats a pooch for making friends

A s best friends go, dogs are hard to beat. Not least because, unlike real best friends, they don’t go all huffy and refuse to answer texts if they sense a rival for your affections.

And it just gets better. According to new research, having a dog actively attracts human chums and makes their owners seem more likeable.

Finally, George Osborne’s girly Bichon Frisé makes sense! It was a winsome Plan B in case his Autumn Statement didn’t quite stack up. Which, when you think about it, makes him as shrewd a Chancellor as we’ve had in (dog) years.

Nothing reveals more about someone than their choice of best friend; thus tiny “teacup” dogs, as favoured by Paris Hilton are, like her, woefully passé.

On the other hand, Kate Moss stays streetwise with a Staffie cross called Archie, Rihanna softens her image when she carries Oliver, her curly maltipoo (Maltese/ poodle cross) and Anne Hathaway radiates down-to-earth contentment with her chocolate Labrador, Esmeralda.

Rugged and characterful is the byword for chaps; Ryan Gosling is devoted to his 13-year-old mongrel, George, Owen Wilson runs with his rangy Australian cattle dog, and Orlando Bloom is inseparable from his Moroccan rescue mutt, Sidi. Irresistible.

When it comes to making friends, influencing people and wowing the ladies, two legs may be good, but four is always better.

No parking your practical jokes on my lawn

'Mummy, are you and Daddy splitting up?” my daughter demanded this week.

“No, darling, but remember if we do, it will be all your fault.” Calm down, I’m joking. Her little sister will have to take her share of the blame, obviously.

“Are you sure you’re not getting divorced?” the big one repeated, peering outside. “Because Daddy has put the house up for sale.”

“Don’t be so… Stop! Stop!” I cried at the man hammering an estate agent’s sign into place in our front garden.

As in any marriage, occasional shadows fall upon our sunny domestic uplands. Usually, it’s me, petulantly flinging off my wedding ring. Then promptly losing it, then doing exactly the same with its replacement.

My husband is more of a buttoned-up brooder, so dramatically selling the house from under us isn’t his style. Besides which, I am so endlessly lovable, why would he do such a thing?

Anyway, out I charged in my bare feet to wrestle the chap to the ground, when I read the small print: namely, the estate agents are proud sponsors of our primary school’s Christmas Fair.

My mum chums had urged my husband not to tell me as it would be “really funny” to see my reaction.

Not nearly as funny as when I steal their wedding rings. And immediately lose them.

The pineapples were just for you, Nelson

As the tributes to Nelson Mandela flow freely, I can vividly recall shedding tears the historic day he finally left prison after 27 years of incarceration.

I wouldn’t say I brought about his release single-handedly, but I did dance to Free Nelson Mandela quite a bit in the student union.

By way of political protest, I also engaged in acts of retail terrorism by going to Somerfield supermarket with friends and loading our trolleys with South African produce; that is, tins of Dole pineapple.

We simultaneously wheeled them to the checkouts and once they had been laboriously swiped, we then abandoned them, crying “Down with apartheid!” and legged it out of the shop, pursued by security guards.

You can see why I consider myself a footnote (footsoldier) in history, although I don’t think I had as much direct impact on Mandela as his meeting with the Spice Girls.

The first black South African president was an astonishing man, who bore life’s terrible tribulations without bitterness. His clear-eyed vision was undimmed by his shameful treatment at the hands of the authorities, his dignity, courage and sense of duty were remarkable.

But, arguably, his greatest achievement was in retaining his humanity, his humour, his goodwill to all men, even his captors.

Liberty is, of course, a priceless legacy, but real freedom lies in forgiveness.

Kim and Kanye Do Art Basel With North

Kanye West didn't look like he was in the mood to party when he and Kim Kardashian attended a bash hosted by DuJour magazine in Miami on Wednesday night. Art-lover Kanye took advantage of a small break in his touring schedule to head down to Miami, which is currently hosting Art Basel. Kanye was still pouting when he and Kim met up with Lindsay Lohan and Kim's friend Jonathan Cheban at a different party later that night.

Kanye's serious mood could have something to do with the fact that his Yeezus tour has been getting bad press as of late. The rapper made headlines over the weekend when he briefly stormed off the stage during a show in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, allegedly because he was angry about his sound effects not working properly. Kanye was also back in the press on Wednesday when it was revealed that he filled less than a fourth of the 18,500 seats at a gig in Kansas City, Missouri, the previous evening.

Kanye's troubles aside, his daughter, North West, got an "art lesson," as mum Kim out it when she met artist Jeff Koons during the Art Basel festivities on Wednesday.

PAUL WALKER Secretly Paid $9,000 For Military Couple’s Engagement Ring

With Paul Walker‘s tragic death last Saturday still fresh in the news, we hear more and more heartwarming (and some heartbreaking) stories about the late “Fast & the Furious” star’s philanthropic ways.

Game of Thrones star Oona Chaplin helps singer Kate Nash become actress

Comments

As a solo singer, Kate Nash achieved a number one hit album, Made of Bricks, but she enlisted some assistance to help her become an actress.

Nash, who has a part in the film Powder Room, was advised by her co-star Oona Chaplin, the granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin.

“Where can I start with her?” Nash tells Mandrake at the SeriousFun gala dinner at the Roundhouse, in Chalk Farm, north London.

“She is such a giving actress: not just in the way that she will always read lines with you, but she will say, 'No, turn this way, it’s better for the light’, and she’ll always put you in a position that is more flattering for you. Acting is something I really want to pursue, so her advice is golden. She knows what she is doing.”

Lord Tebbit was on good form at a party that John Bercow hosted for Jonathan and Elizabeth Aitken in the State Rooms of Speaker’s House.

The gathering, also attended by Lord Lamont, Alan Duncan and Lord Archer, was to celebrate the publication of Aitken’s book, Margaret Thatcher: Power and Personality.

In his speech, Aitken paid tribute to his wife, who suffered a massive brain haemorrhage in July. He told Mandrake at the time that it was a “miracle” she survived.

How Britain became the world's busiest film studio

Comments

One of my local weekly papers in north London reported recently that Nicole Kidman, no less, had been sighted in Primrose Hill, on the set of her new film Paddington – an adaptation of Michael Bond’s children’s books about a lovable little bear.

The tone of the report was faintly excitable (Celeb! Right here on our doorstep!) but the truth is, you almost can’t move for big Hollywood stars in Britain these days. They’re here by the truckload, busily shooting movies, most of them American-financed.

You may feel you’ve heard this story before. There have been many false dawns in the history of British film production – and government agencies here haven’t exactly been slow to trumpet Britain’s status as a place to get movies made. Their triumphant press releases are legendary.

So it comes to something when the Los Angeles Times – effectively Hollywood’s hometown newspaper of record – makes the point unbidden. A report last month noted that Brad Pitt was here, shooting Fury, Sony’s World War II action drama, in London and Oxfordshire. At Shepperton Studios, Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep head a large cast adapting Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods for Disney, and Marvel is filming Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2. Nearby Pinewood is hosting JJ Abrams' new Star Wars films, Ridley Scott's biblical epic Exodus, and the 24th Bond, which may film on the studio's brand new, 45,000 square-foot 'Q stage', opened earlier this week by Skyfall star Ben Whishaw. And Ron Howard is directing In the Heart of the Sea, an adventure yarn about a 19th century seagoing vessel threatened by a whale. Chris Hemsworth stars; it is mostly being shot at Leavesden studios in Hertfordshire.

Leavesden is a key location in this success story: it was, of course, the site for the phenomenally successful Harry Potter films, which can be said to have turned the corner for UK production. In fact, Britain is now such a popular filming destination that our studios are now experiencing a 'capacity crunch'; according to a report in Deadline, Edgar Wright's Ant-Man is just one film that planned to shoot in Britain but was turned away due to a lack of space. All of which makes Pinewood's plans for expansion - currently being opposed by Buckinghamshire council - more urgent.

Ridley Scott: Why I owe my style to the BBC

31 Oct 2013

Britain already had a world-class franchise, in the shape of the James Bond films – but they tend to only come along every three or four few years, whereas there were eight Potter movies in the space of a decade – which meant virtually continuous employment for literally thousands of film workers in this country.

But in fairness, governments of both parties have played their part in promoting our film industry in the past decade, and offered tax breaks to foreign productions willing to shoot in Britain. It also helps that Britain has far more than its fair share of experienced film crafts people – the folks behind the cameras who help movies come to life. This has been true for years now; Steven Spielberg told me back in the Nineties that he loved shooting in Britain (he partly made Saving Private Ryan here) because of its highly skilled film workers.

The Potter franchise gave many of those workers continuous practice at perfecting their skills – to the extent that Adrian Wootton, chief executive of both Film London and the British Film Commission, could tell the Los Angeles Times: “Don’t think of us as the cheapest place to film. Think of us as the Rolls-Royce of places to film.”

What else do we have going for us? First-rate actors, many of them stage-trained, who these days effortlessly cross the Atlantic and make their mark on American film and TV productions, as well as those here at home.

And one of the great under-reported stories is the influence of London’s brilliant special effects houses, which contribute so much to CGI-dominated movies. The big one currently is Alfonso Cuarón’s masterpiece Gravity, the visually gorgeous outer space epic. But Cuarón couldn’t have done it without the guidance of Tim Webber, his visual effects supervisor who, with his team at Framestore in London’s Soho, created those heart-stopping images.

All this adds up to a rarity: an unconditionally good news story about a sector of British industry. It’s all about inward investment: more workers in the film business are working more, and on relatively lucrative projects. They get paid more, they feel more affluent, they pay for more goods and services in Britain, and pay higher taxes to the exchequer.

In that way they give a small boost to an economy that needs all the help to get. What’s not to like? Maybe, after all, it is worth getting excited if Nicole Kidman is spied on a London street.

Nigella Lawson: I only had dinner parties every two years

Details of life in the Saatchi-Lawson household were given to the jury in the trial of two former aides to the TV cook who deny fraudulently spending £685,000 on company credit cards.

Karin Arden, defending Francesca Grillo, a housekeeper, suggested that her client was allowed to buy herself treats using the credit card as a reward for working long hours, which including clearing up after dinner parties.

Nigella Lawson gives evidence: live updates

05 Dec 2013

Miss Lawson said: "I would say I had dinner parties once on a two-year basis at Eaton Square (the marital home in west London). I was not happy about that.

"I can hardly remember a dinner party at Eaton Square. Mr Saatchi likes to take people out to Scott's restaurant."

It was following a row at Scott's, when Mr Saatchi was photographed grabbing his wife by the throat, that the couple split up and later divorced.

Miss Lawson told the jury that Mr Saatchi was very particular about the way his house was kept, objecting strongly to the suggestion that being in charge of housekeeping was "the job of a woman".

She said: "It was Mr Saatchi's job and my job. He would go round and point at marks he wanted removed. He is a person with a tremendous eye for detail."

Mr Saatchi was also particular about his food. While the weekly shopping would be ordered from Waitrose and delivered by Ocado, Miss Grillo was "very involved in the purchasing of Mr Saatchi's eggs" and would also be sent out for his Frappucino coffees.

She said Francesca and her sister and co-defendant Elisabetta would, like other aides, order food for the house.

"We would have the Ocado order up and people would shout out 'we need this, we need that'. I would say (to the Grillos) 'do you want ravioli as a treat' in the same way that I would buy the others something."

Miss Lawson also liked to treat her staff to days out and gifts, including an outing to Brussels with all of her aides to shop in a Christmas market.

Asked about her aides' other duties, she said: "I'm afraid to say I make them appear on my television programmes. When I'm testing a recipe they write it down."

They did not, however, look after her Twitter account. "I do my own Twitter account," she said.

She also said she was "quite happy to do the washing up" but Mr Saatchi "didn't want me washing up" so he would phone Miss Grillo and ask her to do it.

The Grillo sisters were treated "like family" and took Miss Lawson and Mr Saatchi's children from their previous marriages on up to five foreign holidays per year, to locations including New York, San Tropez and Italy.

Miss Arden suggested Miss Lawson had a "penchant for all things Italian" and she replied: "I do, and I don't see how that could ever be interpreted by anyone as a criticism."

She admitted to phoning Miss Grillo when the aide was on holiday in Spain to ask her if she knew where the TV remote control was.

"That would have made Mr Saatchi incredibly irritable," she said. "I have made a lot of similar phone calls over the years."

The court also heard that the couple had a 12ft x 12ft "silver room" full of tea and coffee services and candlesticks.

Miss Lawson said she was "very glad to see that back of it" when the couple moved, and asked if she ever cleaned it said: "I like cleaning silver and I like cleaning shoes. It's a wonderful task, I find it very therapeutic."

Asked if Miss Grillo was allowed to withdraw up to £800 per month cash on the credit card to pay a specialist silver cleaning firm, she said: "Francesca had a great job as a cleaner who could employ other cleaners," but doubted that the couple spent up to £9,600 per year hiring people to do something that "a bit of Duraglit" would sort out.

Louise Redknapp: She Wears It Well

Louise Redknapp Photo: Rex

Do not be tempted by all the tatt and fluff of Christmas. People may be telling you that a naff Yuletide sweater is where it's at for 2013, but let me tell you, ironic style never did anyone any long-term favours. It may be all the rage with you 20-somethings to get yourself into the Primark jumper with a reindeer on but I'm not convinced.

Just pop into your local Costa where the baristas have been forced to wear Santa's Little Helpers style t-shirts and tell me, do they look like they're having a good time?

While Stella McCartney no doubt enjoyed - if not downright encouraged - Daisy Lowe wearing a Santa hat at the designer's Bruton Street store Christmas lights event last night , was Stella herself wearing one? No, she was not.

In fact, with Stella leading the way, the unofficial dress code of the night appeared to be anything in entirely non-festive black. Topped with - a zingily coloured coat.

Salma Hayek did it in yellow (very Elizabeth II) and Louise Redknapp, whom in recent years has turned into something of a stealth stylista, demonstrated the look perfectly with black trousers, sweater and a stunner of a Stella McCartney autumn/winter '13 coat in (what I'm calling) tangerine. Now that is a stylish, nodding wink to the festive season.

Nigella Lawson tells court: 'I would never make my children orphans through drug addiction'

By Gordon Rayner, Chief Reporter

4:30PM GMT 05 Dec 2013

Follow

Nigella Lawson has told a court she would never risk making her children "orphans" by becoming addicted to cocaine or other drugs.

She also denied she kept a stash of cocaine in a box with her late husband's wedding ring as she ended two days of evidence in the fraud trial of two former aides.

Miss Lawson told a jury her ex-husband Charles Saatchi knew she had taken cocaine with her first husband John Diamond during his battle with terminal cancer, and she had never promised him that she would not take drugs again.

On an afternoon when defence barristers repeatedly clashed with Miss Lawson as well as the judge in the case, Miss Lawson was told not to answer whether her children had given her a Mother's Day card with a cannabis "spliff" taped to the front.

Miss Lawson became increasingly emotional and told defence barrister Karin Arden: "If you want to put me on trial, put me on trial, but I cannot think that it's right to have me here as a witness for the Crown and treat me like this."

Nigella Lawson gives evidence: live updates

05 Dec 2013

Miss Arden suggested to Miss Lawson that her drug use was a "dark, guilty secret" in her marriage.

She replied: "In respect of the cocaine use when my first husband died, Mr Saatchi knew about it." Asked if she made him a promise that "that was the end of it", she replied: "No, I did not make a promise. Mr Saatchi has phoned up newspapers saying a promise had been extracted and broken, it's not true."

The court heard that Miss Lawson had a jewellery box in the shape of a hollowed out book, in which she kept jewellery inherited from her grandmothers and mother and E wedding rings worn by her and Mr Diamond.

Miss Arden said she also kept cocaine in the box, which had at one point been found by her daughter. She said: "I did not."

She also denied that she frequently had a "runny nose" or whites powder around her nose, and that cannabis dealers turned up at her house to sell her drugs.

She said: "I promise you if I took the drugs to the extent you say I would not be standing here today.

"You know as well as I do that regular cocaine users don't look like this, they're scrawny. If you think I'm going to sabotage my health and run the risk of leaving my children orphans you are very wrong."

Miss Arden asked: "Do you agree that you received a Mother's Day card in 2011 or 2012 with a spliff taped to the card saying 'To enjoy later'?"

Judge Robin Johnson stepped in and told Miss Arden: "That ends your cross-examination. I'm not having any more. You have exhausted my patience."

He told Miss Lawson not to answer the question.

Earlier, Miss Lawson rejected the suggestion that she allowed a former aide to "spend, spend, spend" on a company credit card when she and Charles Saatchi sold their home for £25 million.

Francesca Grillo is accused of fraudulently spending £580,000 on the credit card, which Miss Lawson described as "disgusting, greedy".

She said it was "totally implausible" that she would allow Miss Grillo to spend as much on clothes for a "treat" in one transaction as some people spend on a car.

Karin Arden, defending Miss Grillo, who denies fraud, suggested to Miss Lawson that she loosened the family purse strings when she and Mr Saatchi put their home in Eaton Square, west London, on the market for £37m.

Miss Arden suggested that Miss Lawson had allowed Miss Grillo to spend £5,205 on a jacket and dresses in Miu Miu as a reward for all her hard work keeping the house clean for prospective buyers to see it.

"You told her to buy them on the credit card because she deserved it," Miss Arden suggested.

"Five thousand pounds?! Why on earth would I do that?" Miss Lawson replied. "There are cars that cost that much money."

Miss Arden said: "You were trying to sell the house for £37m, it was giddy money and you told her to treat herself."

Miss Lawson, who said she had not personally profited from the eventual £25m sale of Mr Saatchi's house, rejected this.

Miss Lawson has now finished giving evidence, having spent almost two full days in the witness box.

South African Icon Nelson Mandela Dead at 95, Celebs React

Getty Images President Jacob Zuma made the announcement from the Union Buildings in Pretoria, saying Mandela died in his Houghton home surrounded by his wife, Graça Machel, and members of his family.

Mandela was hospitalized June 8 with a recurring lung infection and was in critical condition, but rallied for a short period of time.

Zuma also stated that Mandela, known affectionately as Tata Madiba, would have a state funeral and that the flags would fly half-mast from December 6 until after the funeral.

Many around the world see Mandela as a symbol of reconciliation, and the victorious struggle against apartheid.

He was jailed for 27 years under apartheid rule and released in 1990. He then was a key player in ending the apartheid era and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, together with former president FW De Klerk, for the “peaceful termination of the apartheid regime and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.” Mandela then became South Africa's first black president in 1994.

He stepped down from the presidency in 1999 after one term in office, but continued with a busy public schedule. He brokered negotiations for peace in Rwanda, established the Mandela-Rhodes Foundation for educational scholarship, and launched the 46664 AIDS fundraising foundation.

Mandela retreated from the public eye at age 85. His last public appearance was a brief one at the end of the 2010 World Cup.

Hollywood took to Twitter to pay their respects, including "Extra's" own Maria Menounos, who wrote, "Nelson #Mandela has died. So heartbreaking. There is no one like him. #inspiration"
Here are more reactions:

Morgan Freeman: "Today the world lost one of the true giants of the past century.  Nelson Mandela was a man of  incomparable honor, unconquerable strength, and unyielding resolve -- a saint to many, a hero to all who treasure liberty, freedom and the dignity of humankind.  As we remember his triumphs, let us, in his memory, not just reflect on how far we've come, but on how far we have to go.   Madiba may no longer be with us, but his journey continues on with me and with all of us."

Dennis Haysbert: "Portraying Nelson Mandela, in the film "Goodbye Bafana" was a defining moment in my life and my career. We as a society, have been blessed to live in a time that Nelson Mandela has lived, loved, and led. What he has done for his country, his countrymen, and everyone on this planet may not be achieved again… ever. I will always honor him as a saint."

Whoopi Goldberg: "I want 2give the world a hug I was told Mandeba just passed. Nelson Mandela R.I.P. Time for a well earned sleep.Condolences to his family."

Eva Longoria: "Today the world lost one it's greatest leaders. Rest in peace Mandela..."

Samuel L. Jackson: "Never met a better person in my life than Nelson Mandela. My sympathy to his family & his country."

Barbara Walters: "A remarkable man and an inspiration to all. Remembering #NelsonMandela"

Anderson Cooper: "Mandela is gone. There is no one else like him." Related Posts Nelson Mandela in Critical Condition, South African Govt. Keri Russell splits from husband

Jennifer Lawrence hungers for normalcy

By Donna Freydkin USA Today Thu Dec 5, 2013 2:33 PM

NEW YORK — Behind the clever banter and disarming repartee, beyond the endlessly glamorous red-carpet Dior gowns, in a private dining room on the second floor of a downtown hotel, her loafer-clad feet kicked up behind her, sits the real Jennifer Lawrence.

And all this actress wants, right now, is a Corona. Or an Amstel Light. But the only brews available are of the artisanal
variety, so Lawrence looks flummoxed. "I'm a Budweiser person. So I don't really understand," she says, as the waitress goes to great lengths to explain the intricate differences between the pale ales on offer.

Away from the awards-season hubbub, which again envelopes her for her role as a foxy, yet foolish wife in American Hustle, Lawrence is a self-aware woman trying to have some version of a regular existence. "I've built my career. I need to build my human life. I need to get a house and connect to the people around me and not work for a little while," she says.

Topping her to-do list: buying a home when she wraps the two-part Hunger Games franchise finale, Mockingjay, which shoots until June.

But for now, she does her best to retain some sense of routine in an existence that's mostly lived in hotels, fueled by room service. Her on-again boyfriend, Nicholas Hoult, helps keep her sane, away from prying eyes. "We're really good at it," she says of maintaining their under-the-radar romance.

She's infatuated with her two young nephews, whom she FaceTimes every night. She decompresses by watching reality TV, in particular Keeping Up with the Kardashians. And she keeps her best actress Oscar, won for last year's Silver Linings Playbook, at her mom's house to avoid any weirdness when friends come over, to try to nip in the bud the possibility of people standing at attention around her.

"I just get allergic to that kind of thing. People treating you differently when you don't feel any differently is really alienating. You can see, the way they look at you. I can see if that was who I surrounded myself with, that's why you change," she says. "I find people who don't change. That's where I get my reality."

And her ability to say exactly the right thing at the right time? It's a gift. "She's an amazing study of people. She really understands the teeniest differences in people. She can read people in a second," says The Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence. "She can figure you out in an instant. She does it with such ease, from the gut."

Zoe Saldana: Childhood bullying made me 'stronger'

By Arienne Thompson USA Today Thu Dec 5, 2013 2:38 PM

Like many of her fellow celebs, A-list actress Zoe Saldana wasn't always one of the cool kids.

In her cover interview for Ocean Drive magazine's December issue, the Out of the Furnace star says that when she and her sisters moved to the Dominican Republic with their mother following their father's death, she didn't fit in at her new school.

"It was culture shock at first. Kids are going to poke at whatever is foreign to them, and here we come: these three girls speaking English. We're also very intelligent and kind of sassy, and we were going to a very prestigious private school and we were one of the least fortunate families," Saldana recalls. "Kids tend to be a little cruel to what they don't know. But even though throughout those years we kind of suffered because we got bullied, as soon as we left we just became these forces. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and it was not going to kill us, trust me!"

She added that her experience with bullying made her "absolutely fearless. I've been called everything, I've been told everything. And yet the moment you realize they were coming from a place of complete fear because they knew that you were the one who was going to get away, you're free."

She shared more about keeping her personal life private, Nina Simone backlash and her production company.

On staying private in the press: "I love what I do so much, but I love my (personal) life more. And I realized throughout the years of being in this business that the only way to maintain some kind of sanity is to protect that which is most dear to you, which is your life and everyone that's in it. ... I like respecting all of the family members that are in my life and my friends. These are people that choose to be in my life; they're not choosing to be in what I do. So I owe it to them to keep them protected."

On controversy surrounding the Nina Simone biopic: "I can't stop to think about who thinks me to be black enough or not black enough. I know who I am. I like who I am. And I'm not going to explain who I am. I've always been like that — I was raised to be that way. ... It's one of the scariest projects I've ever been involved with because it was about an iconic figure, and there were so many political (issues) around it from the beginning, but I really wanted it to be a love song to Nina Simone and I wanted it to just come from a place of absolute love."

On working with her sisters on their production company Cinestar: "It's what I've wanted to do my whole life, to always be with my sisters and work with them. Now we're finally reaping the benefits of all these years that we've been planning, working, and starting our own company." Their plan is to "shed light on the Hispanic market ... a growing and thriving population in America, filled with consumers, voters, tax payers, and avid vocal speakers. We want to finally be able to make projects that, somewhere or another, have a Hispanic presence."

Mandy Patinkin shaves off Saul beard

By Ann Oldenburg USA Today Thu Dec 5, 2013 3:22 PM

For months, we've been watching Mandy Patinkin portray serious, bearded, CIA chief Saul Berenson on Homeland.

But on Thursday's Live! With Kelly and Michael the singer/actor arrived completely facial hair-free.

"I shaved it the minute I finished the last shot!" Patinkin said gleefully. "I felt like I was taking off a Mickey Mouse mask."

Patinkin, 61, said he has had the beard for "two years" for Homeland and other work. "I couldn't take it off."

So when he finally did get rid of it, he said, "I felt about 20 years younger!"

He promised, "It'll come back, you know."

The beard, he says, helped people to recognize him. "The thing I loved most about it is once the show got more and more successful, wherever I go people would go, 'Saul, Saul!' I'd be in an airport in a foreign country and people would say, 'Sa-ul, Sa-ul! And I took it off and, like, nobody know me."

He loved the anonymity again, saying he could walk around unnoticed. "This is what real life is like!"

As for the Homeland finale on Dec. 15, all he would divulge is, "I think you will be shocked, without a doubt, and stunned. And confused. But shocked beyond words."

Adam Levine: Pressure is on to stay sexy

By Ann Oldenburg USA Today Thu Dec 5, 2013 3:34 PM

People's Sexiest Man Alive for 2013 drops by to chat with Ellen DeGeneres on her show Thursday and Adam Levine talks about the heavy burden that comes with his title.

"Do you feel different? Do you feel an obligation to act differently?" asked Ellen as they taped the segment.

"Yeah, actually," said The Voice coach. "I take it very seriously."

"Good," said Ellen.

But then Levine said, "No, actually not at all. It's funny, it's kind of funny, right? It's amazing. You don't ever think that's actually going to happen and then it does and then it's really trippy."

When asked about some of the reaction he's gotten to the news, Levine said, "I've had some weird ones. My fiancée (Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo) burst into laughter. Keeping me humble as usual. My mother said that she asked me very sweetly if that makes her the sexiest mom alive. Which is really cute and also kind of weird. And I said I guess so. And my father just said, 'You're welcome, son.' "

Kordell Stewart, Porsha Williams' divorce is final

By Jonathan Landrum Jr. Associated Press Thu Dec 5, 2013 3:36 PM

ATLANTA — Former Pittsburgh Steeler standout Kordell Stewart's divorce from his reality show wife is final.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge John J. Goger issued final a decree in the case Thursday.

Stewart, 41, who retired from the NFL last year, filed for divorce from Porsha Williams in March, claiming the marriage was "irretrievably broken."

Randy Kessler, Williams' lawyer, said the couple is glad to have amicably resolved the matter. The pair used to appear together on Bravo's "The Real Housewives of Atlanta." Williams is still on the show.

Williams said she first learned of the divorce from the media and felt "disappointed," her lawyer said.

Stewart's initial filing said the two married on May 21, 2011, and have no children together. Stewart has a son from a previous relationship. Williams filed a counterclaim about a week later.

Shiel Edlin, Stewart's lawyer, said in a statement that the divorce process was "very difficult" for his client and son.

"As a single dad, Kordell wanted to put his best foot forward by doing what was in the best interest of Syre," Edlin said. "However, the lack of truthfulness by Porsha during the divorce process has been very confusing and hurtful to Kordell and his son."

Reached by phone, Edlin would not elaborate on whether he was referring to Williams' insinuations about Stewart that he might be gay. She hinted as much during episodes of "Real Housewives" after Stewart filed for divorce.

Stewart, who is a sports talk show host in Atlanta, went on another local radio show to strongly deny it.

Stewart was a sensation in Pittsburgh in the late 1990s and was nicknamed "Slash" for his versatility as quarterback, running back and wide receiver. He helped the Steelers reach the Super Bowl in 1996 and made the Pro Bowl in 2001. He finished his last two seasons with Baltimore in 2004-05.

Calle 13 singer says Palestinians like Puerto Rico

By Areej Hazboun and Bernat Armangue Associated Press Thu Dec 5, 2013 3:42 PM

BETHLEHEM, West Bank — The frontman for the Grammy-winning Puerto Rican hip-hop outfit Calle 13 said Thursday that he sees similarities between the political situation of Palestinians and those of his own people.

Speaking to The Associated Press in Bethlehem, where he is shooting the band's latest music video, Rene Perez said Puerto Ricans were linked to Palestinians "because we are a colony of the United States. Here you have the situation with Israel."

Perez, also known as Residente, added that Puerto Rico and the Palestinians both have "cosmetic" governments.

"Here most people want to be free, they fight for their country," he said in the West Bank city, the traditional birthplace of Jesus. "It would be good to start building bridges between Palestine and Puerto Rico."

The Palestinians are currently engaged in peace talks with Israel that they hope will lead to an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza, territories Israel conquered in the 1967 Middle East war.

Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory for 115 years and its people have been American citizens since 1917. Residents of the island cannot vote in the U.S. presidential election, have no representation in the Senate and only limited representation in the House of Representatives.

Calle 13 is known for its politically charged lyrics, Afro-Caribbean beats and raunchy dance anthems. The group has won 19 Latin Grammy Awards and two Grammy Awards.

Perez, who performs along with his step-brother Eduardo Cabra, has emerged as a leading antiestablishment rapper and is a strong supporter of the Puerto Rican independence movement. Calle 13 has a long history of lacing social messages over bass-thumping beats.

Perez said he chose to come to the Palestinian territories to shoot the majority of the band's latest video, "Multi Viral." He said the song is about manipulation of the media and how it distorts information. He said he worked on the song with Tom Morello, a former guitarist with Rage Against the Machine, and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

"I think music never stops being music. It always keeps being music and the message can be social, political, anything," Perez said.

Kanye West accuses Nike of extortion

Photo: Getty

Ahh, another day, another Kanye West rant against the fashion world. Having ditched his contract with Nike for a more lucrative one with Adidas - he has to think about the royalties for his daughter, you know? - the rapper has lashed out about Nike's codes of sales conduct within store.

READ: Kanye West signs deal with Adidas

The lucky listeners of Kanye's speech were those expecting to hear less about sneakers, and more of album Yeezus, at Miami's American Airlines Arena, according to Page Six.

"How many of you are waiting for the red Yeezies?" the intermission began. "You know what they told my homey who owned the store up there? They said, 'If you want the Yeezies, you've got to take 10 other shoes from Nike.' That's called extortion!" the rapper quipped.

READ: Why can't Kanye West make it in fashion?

Call us Sherlock, but might Kanye just be venting his beef with Nike over the fact he received zero royalties from the sales of his Yeezy trainers? Now that Adidas have come 'a calling with a flashy, high-income deal, Kanye must be wishing he's stood his ground over his design rights with Nike.

Sorry Kanye, this isn't to do with your homey. You've been rumbled.

Comments

Rachel Riley announced that she was leaving her husband after waltzing with Pasha Kovalev on Strictly Come Dancing. Now, the Russian, 33, is to give Elaine Paige a twirl.

Elaine Paige

“We are filming the Christmas special this week,” the 65-year-old singer tells Mandrake. “I’m absolutely terrified. I don’t feel that I have rehearsed enough. I have been partnered with this wonderful man called Pasha, and it’s all in the name of good fun and Christmas spirit, but I am not feeling confident about it.”

She adds: “We are dancing to Jingle Bells. It’s what Craig Revel Horwood calls a cha-cha- chaaah.”

Grayson Perry knew that he had no option but to wear his frock for Red magazine’s Hot Women Awards 2013, but isn’t he ever tempted not to bother with all the clobber?

“I think people would struggle to recognize me in my male get-up,” says the painter who delivered this year’s Reith Lecture. “I would always rather wear a frock out and about when I can, partly because I am a trannie and I love it, but also, the joy is that when I go out in my male get up, no one recognises me, which is how I like things.”

Still, dressing up as a woman would not appear to deter them from chasing after him. “Take my word for it: as a man, wearing a frock, it doesn’t impede your ability to pull. Don’t ask me why.”

Fox returns to den at Christmas

Emilia Fox, who split up with the 51-year-old television chef Marco Pierre White last month, is looking forward to spending time with her parents this Christmas.

“I love this time of year,” the daughter of the actors Edward Fox and Joanna David tells Mandrake at the launch of the Goring’s luxury Christmas tree collection. “I can’t wait to spend it with my family.”

The star of Silent Witness, 39, has a three-year-old daughter, Rose, by her former boyfriend, Jeremy Gilley, the founder of the campaigning organisation Peace One Day.

“I adore Christmas, especially getting the tree,” she says. “We haven’t got ours yet, but this year we might get a couple of trees, as I want to try some different decorations.”

Nigella Lawson arrives at court

Nigella Lawson arrives at Isleworth Crown Court in London, where she is due to give evidence in the fraud trial of her two former personal assistants 10:50AM GMT 04 Dec 2013

Nigella Lawson arrived at court today as she prepares to give evidence in the trial of two of her former personal assistants.

The TV cook is a prosecution witness in the trial of Italian sisters Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo.

The pair are accused of abusing their positions by using credit cards loaned to them by Ms Lawson and her former husband Charles Saatchi to spend more than £685,000 on themselves.

Ms Lawson, 53, wearing a long dark coat, was greeted by dozens of photographers and television crews waiting outside Isleworth Crown Court in west London as she arrived this morning.

Prosecutors in the trial claim the Grillo sisters lived the "high life", spending the money on designer clothes and handbags from Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Vivienne Westwood.

Questioned about the drug-taking allegations, Mr Saatchi told the court: "It was hearsay. I personally have absolutely no knowledge that Nigella has ever taken a drug ever.

Nigella Lawson: Charles Saatchi had a 'temper' and would 'shout and swear'

By Gordon Rayner, Chief Reporter

1:44PM GMT 04 Dec 2013

Nigella Lawson confided in an aide that Charles Saatchi had a "temper" and that she had contemplated leaving him some time before they finally separated, a court has heard.

Miss Lawson told Elisabetta Grillo that "I don't know how long I can take this" because Mr Saatchi would "shout and swear" at her.

Details of the couple's marriage were set out before a jury in the case of Miss Grillo and her sister Francesca, who together face charges that they defrauded Mr Saatchi out of £685,000 spent on his credit cards.

Giving evidence for the prosecution at Isleworth Crown Court, Miss Lawson was asked by Anthony Metzer QC, defending Elisabetta Grillo, if she had told his client about the problems in her marriage and if she "contemplated leaving him".

Nigella: death of dream for Domestic Goddess?

She said: "I would say 'I don't know how long I can take this' but I never made plans to leave him. He did lose his temper sometimes."

Asked if Mr Saatchi used to "shout and swear" at her, she said he did, and Miss Grillo may well have heard their rows.

Mr Metzer asked if her background "conflicted" with Mr Saatchi's as her lifestyle was more bohemian.

She replied: "I don't understand why my marriage is pertinent to you."

Mr Metzer also referred to the couple's "unfortunate" divorce in July, to which she retorted: "I wouldn't say unfortunately."

Miss Lawson confirmed that she spent time with Mr Saatchi before the death of her late husband John Diamond, but said it was with Mr Diamond's blessing and on one occasion they all went on holiday together.

Elisabetta (L) and Francesca Grillo arrive at Isleworth Crown Court (Reuters)

She said Mr Saatchi liked the Grillo sisters to take their holidays separately so that one of them would always be "on duty", though they would sometimes return to their native Italy together at Christmas.

She said: "I think it didn't altogether please Mr Saatchi but I did try to explain to him that it was Christmas."

Mr Metzer referred to her children by their first names, but she said: "Do my children have to be referred to by name? Can they just be referred to as my son and daughter?" Mr Metzer agreed.

Miss Lawson also objected strongly to a suggestion from Mr Metzer that Elisabetta Grillo had acted as a "surrogate mother" to her children when Mr Diamond was dying.

She said: "My children were hurt to the quick when they saw that (written on an internet blog alongside allegations that she took cocaine). They don't need a surrogate mother.

"It's meant to aggrandise your client and suggest that I was not there to raise my children."

She added that her children felt "abandoned and betrayed" by the defendants because they "never once got in touch" after their arrest.

The court heard that Elisabetta Grillo lived in the marital home and had a bigger bedroom even than Miss Lawson and Mr Saatchi.

Charles Saatchi and Nigella Lawson (REX)

She was also paid to clean the flat of Miss Lawson's father, the former chancellor Lord Lawson, and brought his sheets back to be washed because he did not have a washing machine. Miss Grillo was allowed to take taxis to his flat because she had to take a vacuum cleaner with her, as he did not have one of those either.

Mr Metzer suggested that the Grillo sisters had to buy themselves expensive clothes because they met many celebrity friends of Miss Lawson and had to look presentable.

Miss Lawson suggested Mr Metzer was "obsessed" with celebrities and added: "I'm afraid to say I very often don't look presentable. She is Italian, she looked a lot more presentable than I did."

Miss Lawson was asked about her team of personal assistants, known as "team Nigella", and said: "No, they refer to themselves as team cupcake."

She confirmed that the aides were often given lavish gifts as a reward for their hard work and loyalty. Elisabetta Grillo was given gifts including a Hermes watch and a Diamond necklace from Tiffany's, while another aide put her £12,500 wedding reception at the Saatchi Gallery on Mr Saatchi's credit card after being told the couple would foot the bill.

But aides, and even Miss Lawson herself, were never allowed to withdraw cash on the credit cards because "Charles kept a huge stash it above the fridge".

Miss Lawson said: "He put it in a lunch zippy freezer bag above the fridge. I think he did like a huge wad of cash because he didn't like to use credit cards himself."

Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo deny fraud. The trial continues.
