Jennifer Lawrence in line to play Miracle Mop inventor in David O Russell film

Comments

As the awards and nominations continue to stack up, it is becoming increasingly clear that when director David O Russell and Jennifer Lawrence collaborate on a film, success invariably follows.

Now the pair, who worked together on Silver Linings Playbook and whose most recent film American Hustle has been nominated for 10 Oscars, are expected to join forces again on an as-yet-untitled biopic of Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano.

American website Deadline has reported that Russell is in early talks with Fox 2000 (a branch of 20th Century Fox) about telling the story of Mangano, a single mother-of-three who became one of America's most successful entrepreneurs when she invented the Miracle Mop, the first self-wringing mop.

Annie Mumolo, Oscar-nominated for her work with Kristen Wiig on the script of Bridesmaids, has written the script, while John Davis, John Fox and Ken Mok are producing.

If the invention of a self-wringing mop sounds like an unlikely subject for a Hollywood film, Mangano's story is actually a strangely affecting tale.

After graduating from New York's Pace University in 1978, Mangano worked as a waitress and airline reservation manager while single-handedly raising her three children. In 1990, she invented the Miracle Mop and, after modest sales at trade shows, Mangano herself appeared on shopping channel QVC to market her product. Within 20 minutes, she had sold an astonishing 18,000 mops.

She went on to develop a series of other products including the Huggable Hanger and is now considered one of America's finest entrepreneurs after she sold her company, Ingenious Designs, to USA Networks in a multi million dollar deal. Annual sales of her products are still in excess of $150 million. In short, it is a classic rags-to-riches tale.

There is currently no date set for the start of production.

Josh Hutcherson: Jennifer Lawrence has no 'filter'

USA TODAY Tue Nov 26, 2013 9:29 AM

Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta Mellark to Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen, might be in trouble with his film cohort.

The actor dropped by the Late Show With David Letterman on Monday, and talk turned to JLaw.

"Is she fun to work with?" asked Letterman.

"She's incredible. I mean, you've seen what she's like," Hutcherson replied. "That's what she's like. That's really it. There's nothing else there — in a good way!"

She's seems to be "a free spirit," said Letterman.

"You don't say," says Hutcherson, who added, "Never a dull moment!"

"Her filter is turned way down," Letterman suggested.

"No, no, no — she doesn't have a filter," Hutcherson countered.

"No unspoken thoughts," Letterman added.

"No, not one — and if there are, I really don't want to know what they are, because really, if she speaks all these things, I can't imagine," Hutcherson continued.

He went on tell a story of how in interviews she'll say candid things to journalists and then insist it's all off the record. He concludes: "Jennifer says the craziest things!"

Jennifer Lawrence hungers for normalcy

By Donna Freydkin USA Today Thu Dec 5, 2013 2:33 PM

NEW YORK — Behind the clever banter and disarming repartee, beyond the endlessly glamorous red-carpet Dior gowns, in a private dining room on the second floor of a downtown hotel, her loafer-clad feet kicked up behind her, sits the real Jennifer Lawrence.

And all this actress wants, right now, is a Corona. Or an Amstel Light. But the only brews available are of the artisanal
variety, so Lawrence looks flummoxed. "I'm a Budweiser person. So I don't really understand," she says, as the waitress goes to great lengths to explain the intricate differences between the pale ales on offer.

Away from the awards-season hubbub, which again envelopes her for her role as a foxy, yet foolish wife in American Hustle, Lawrence is a self-aware woman trying to have some version of a regular existence. "I've built my career. I need to build my human life. I need to get a house and connect to the people around me and not work for a little while," she says.

Topping her to-do list: buying a home when she wraps the two-part Hunger Games franchise finale, Mockingjay, which shoots until June.

But for now, she does her best to retain some sense of routine in an existence that's mostly lived in hotels, fueled by room service. Her on-again boyfriend, Nicholas Hoult, helps keep her sane, away from prying eyes. "We're really good at it," she says of maintaining their under-the-radar romance.

She's infatuated with her two young nephews, whom she FaceTimes every night. She decompresses by watching reality TV, in particular Keeping Up with the Kardashians. And she keeps her best actress Oscar, won for last year's Silver Linings Playbook, at her mom's house to avoid any weirdness when friends come over, to try to nip in the bud the possibility of people standing at attention around her.

"I just get allergic to that kind of thing. People treating you differently when you don't feel any differently is really alienating. You can see, the way they look at you. I can see if that was who I surrounded myself with, that's why you change," she says. "I find people who don't change. That's where I get my reality."

And her ability to say exactly the right thing at the right time? It's a gift. "She's an amazing study of people. She really understands the teeniest differences in people. She can read people in a second," says The Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence. "She can figure you out in an instant. She does it with such ease, from the gut."

Jennifer Lawrence battled anxiety, saw psychologist

Bang Showbiz Mon Nov 18, 2013 4:08 PM

Jennifer Lawrence saw a psychologist for anxiety.

The 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' star used to attend regular therapy sessions to help control her social anxiety and hyperactivity, problems which developed when she started at school.

She said: ''My nickname was 'Nitro', as in nitroglycerin. I was hyperactive, curious about everything.

''When my mother told me about my childhood, she always told me there was like a light in me, a spark that inspired me constantly. When I entered school, the light went out. We never knew what it was, a kind of social anxiety. But I had lots of friends though. I think mostly I didn't feel intelligent because I wasn't a good student ... I think in life, some people are stupid, but they manage to get by, and I'm one of them. I went to see a psychologist, but nothing worked.''

Eventually Jennifer was only able to overcome her anxiety by taking up acting.

Once the 23-year-old actress took up the profession her problems disappeared.

In an interview with French magazine Madame Figaro, she explained: ''One day, I begged my parents to take me to a casting, we went to New York and that's where I started acting. As soon as I was on stage, my mom started to see the change in me. She saw my fears disappear. She found her daughter again, the one who had this light and joy. I finally found my path in life and something that made me happy, because I felt capable, whereas before I felt useless. That's why my mom fought for me to become an actress.''

The instincts of Jennifer's mother Karen were proved to be correct as Jennifer has gone on to win the Best Actress Oscar - which she was awarded this year for her role in 'Silver Linings Playbook'.

Despite the phenomenal success she has received at such a young age, Jennifer tries to live as normal a life as she can.

She said: ''One of the dangers in the film industry is that things are too fast. I do not want to burn the stages of my life. I want to keep it simple, you see, I do not have an assistant.''
