ABC News correspondent Amy Robach is thankful she decided to undergo a bilateral mastectomy after discovering she had breast cancer.

ABC News' Amy Robach opts for double mastectomy

By Ann Oldenburg USA Today Mon Nov 11, 2013 10:49 AM

Amy Robach, 40, who is married to "Melrose Place" actor Andrew Shue, revealed on "Good Morning America" on Monday that she has breast cancer.

Sitting on a couch, holding hands with Robin Roberts, Robach spoke of having her first mammogram on Oct. 1 as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, never figuring she had cancer.

The doctors told her bluntly, she says, "That mammogram just saved your life."

She and Shue, who married in 2010, have five kids (he has three sons, she has two daughters, both from previous marriages).

Robach says she realized she has "a lot to fight for," and announced on the air, "I have decided to have a bilateral mastectomy. I've decided to be very aggressive. ... I'll have reconstructive surgery. And, we don't know. There's a lot you don't know until you have the surgery. I don't know about chemo. I don't know what stage I am. I don't know if it has spread. So we'll find out those things in the weeks to come."

The surgery is planned for Nov. 14, she writes in a blog post.
