Game of Thrones star Oona Chaplin helps singer Kate Nash become actress

Comments

As a solo singer, Kate Nash achieved a number one hit album, Made of Bricks, but she enlisted some assistance to help her become an actress.

Nash, who has a part in the film Powder Room, was advised by her co-star Oona Chaplin, the granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin.

“Where can I start with her?” Nash tells Mandrake at the SeriousFun gala dinner at the Roundhouse, in Chalk Farm, north London.

“She is such a giving actress: not just in the way that she will always read lines with you, but she will say, 'No, turn this way, it’s better for the light’, and she’ll always put you in a position that is more flattering for you. Acting is something I really want to pursue, so her advice is golden. She knows what she is doing.”

Prince Harry’s cold call

Cressida Bonas: stand by your telephone. Thursday is the first day that Prince Harry will be able to send back personal messages from Antarctica, where he is accompanying a team of wounded servicemen on their race to the South Pole.

There are two check points en route for Harry and other competitors to send voice messages back home by satellite phone. They are sent to a link woman at the expedition’s Antarctic base and then relayed back to friends and family.

After Thursday, the Prince’s next opportunity will be next Monday. The team are due to finish the race on December 14.

Grave humour

Lord Tebbit was on good form at a party that John Bercow hosted for Jonathan and Elizabeth Aitken in the State Rooms of Speaker’s House.

“I have just come from a debate on assisted dying,” said Tebbit, cheerfully, to Chris Grayling, the Justice Secretary, and Greg Knight, the Conservative MP. “I tell you what. There are a great many people these days that I would be happy to assist dying.”

The gathering, also attended by Lord Lamont, Alan Duncan and Lord Archer, was to celebrate the publication of Aitken’s book, Margaret Thatcher: Power and Personality.

In his speech, Aitken paid tribute to his wife, who suffered a massive brain haemorrhage in July. He told Mandrake at the time that it was a “miracle” she survived.

Calle 13 singer says Palestinians like Puerto Rico

By Areej Hazboun and Bernat Armangue Associated Press Thu Dec 5, 2013 3:42 PM

BETHLEHEM, West Bank — The frontman for the Grammy-winning Puerto Rican hip-hop outfit Calle 13 said Thursday that he sees similarities between the political situation of Palestinians and those of his own people.

Speaking to The Associated Press in Bethlehem, where he is shooting the band's latest music video, Rene Perez said Puerto Ricans were linked to Palestinians "because we are a colony of the United States. Here you have the situation with Israel."

Perez, also known as Residente, added that Puerto Rico and the Palestinians both have "cosmetic" governments.

"Here most people want to be free, they fight for their country," he said in the West Bank city, the traditional birthplace of Jesus. "It would be good to start building bridges between Palestine and Puerto Rico."

The Palestinians are currently engaged in peace talks with Israel that they hope will lead to an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza, territories Israel conquered in the 1967 Middle East war.

Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory for 115 years and its people have been American citizens since 1917. Residents of the island cannot vote in the U.S. presidential election, have no representation in the Senate and only limited representation in the House of Representatives.

Calle 13 is known for its politically charged lyrics, Afro-Caribbean beats and raunchy dance anthems. The group has won 19 Latin Grammy Awards and two Grammy Awards.

Perez, who performs along with his step-brother Eduardo Cabra, has emerged as a leading antiestablishment rapper and is a strong supporter of the Puerto Rican independence movement. Calle 13 has a long history of lacing social messages over bass-thumping beats.

Perez said he chose to come to the Palestinian territories to shoot the majority of the band's latest video, "Multi Viral." He said the song is about manipulation of the media and how it distorts information. He said he worked on the song with Tom Morello, a former guitarist with Rage Against the Machine, and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

"I think music never stops being music. It always keeps being music and the message can be social, political, anything," Perez said.

'Windmills of Your Mind' singer Noel Harrison dies

In memoriam: Familiar faces who have died

Associated Press Tue Oct 22, 2013 3:13 PM

LONDON — British actor and musician Noel Harrison, who sang the Academy Award-winning ballad "The Windmills of Your Mind," has died at 79.

Harrison's wife, Lori Chapman, said Tuesday that he suffered a heart attack after a performance on Saturday in Devon, southwest England, and died in a hospital.

The son of actor Rex Harrison, Noel Harrison was a British champion skier and represented the country at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics before becoming a professional musician.

He moved to the United States during the 1960s' "British invasion" and had his greatest success with "The Windmills of Your Mind," which was the theme to 1968 heist movie "The Thomas Crown Affair" and won the best-song Oscar.

Harrison wrote on his website that did not immediately realize the power of the song, by French composer Michel Legrand and American lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

"I went to the studio one afternoon and sang it and pretty much forgot about it," he wrote.

Harrison also appeared opposite Stefanie Powers in the 1966-67 TV series, "The Girl From U.N.C.L.E."

He lived in Canada for many years but returned to Britain in the 1990s. He was married three times, and is survived by his wife, several children and grandchildren.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop singer Pink has been named Billboard's Woman of the Year after scoring her first ever No. 1 album this year, the music industry trade magazine said on Monday.

Pink, 34, who emerged on the pop scene in 2000 as a self-styled antidote to the girl-next-door image presented by young pop singers Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, released her sixth album "The Truth About Love" last September.

The Grammy-winning singer, whose real name is Alecia Moore, scored hits in the past year with "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)," "Try," and "Just Give Me a Reason," a duet with Nate Ruess of rock band Fun. that topped the Billboard Hot 100 song chart.

"It's been an incredible year and I feel so grateful to radio for sticking by me, and to the fans and friends and all of the incredible talent that I was fortunate enough to work with for this album," Pink said in a statement.

The singer has sold more than 40 million albums in her career and some 20 million digital songs, Billboard said.

"When our 2013 mid-year numbers were released, she had the top-selling album and song for a woman, and a blockbuster, sold-out, international arena tour," the magazine's editorial director Bill Werde said in a statement.

Pink will be honored with the award at Billboard's annual Women in Music event in New York in December.

Pop singer Katy Perry was given the award last year and previous winners include country-pop singer Taylor Swift and R&B singer Beyonce.
