Katie Couric maps exit from ABC News

Katie Couric is finalizing plans to exit ABC News.

The former Today host, now in the second year of Katie, a syndicated talk show produced by the network, is negotiating an exit from a three-year deal as "special correspondent" signed in concert with her talk-show gig.

Instead, she'll sign on with Yahoo! for a web-based series, say multiple reports. The network declined comment, but an ABC News executive confirmed a report in The Hollywood Reporter late Friday on Couric's exit talks, noting the network's partnership with Yahoo! may lead to more Couric appearances.

But Couric has only rarely appeared on ABC over the past year, and her talk show--which premiered with much hoopla in September 2012--has turned in disappointing ratings despite key time slots. It's widely expected to be canceled in May, though no final decision has been made. Katie is averaging 2.2 million viewers this season, down 8% from last, and is virtually tied with Steve Harvey).
