The Great Gatsby led the 2014 AACTA Awards nominations, and guess what: the film pretty much dominated the night as well. Baz Luhrmann’s cinematic retelling of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel scooped up 13 awards in the film categories, including best direction for Luhrmann, best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, best supporting actor for Joel Edgerton, best supporting actress for Elizabeth Debicki, and the night’s biggest honour, best film. In the TV categories, there was a lot of love for Jane Campion’s miniseries Top of the Lake and ABC1 drama Redfern Now. See the full list of film and TV winners below.

Martin Carthy, Clannad to get lifetime awards

Comments

Martin Carthy, one of folk's most celebrated figures, will receive a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

The 72-year-old singer from Hatfield, Hertfordshire, will be honoured at a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on February 19. The celebrated Celtic band Clannad will also receive a lifetime award.

Carthy is a master of the ballad of substance, songs that tell stories, whether they are traditional, his own or from contemporary writers. His rich body of work stands alongside a host of productive and often inspiring collaborations, in bands (such as Steeleye Span and Brass Monkey), duos and trios and with his wife Norma Waterson and their daughter Eliza Carthy.

“I’ve just been lucky enough to follow my heart and pretty much do what I want over the past 50 years or so," said Carthy. "If, along the way, I've been able to play a part, however small, in keeping the traditional music of these islands alive, then I consider myself a fortunate man.”

Clannad comprises siblings Moya, Ciaran and Pol Brennan, and their twin uncles Noel and Padraig Duggan. They have sold more than 15 million records since release of their eponymous debut in 1973. Towards the end of the seventies they recruited their younger sister on piano and harmony vocals. She worked on two albums and embarked on several tours with them before going on to establish her own highly successful solo career as Enya. They are well known for the ‘Theme From Harry’s Game’, ‘In A Lifetime’, ‘I Will Find You’ and the soundtrack to the 1984 Robin of Sherwood television series.

Martin Simpson, Anais Mitchell, Bellowhead, Suzanne Vega, Jefferson Hamer, The Fisherman's Friends and The Full English will perform at the Albert Hall awards, which will also honour the Cambridge Folk Festival, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, with the Good Tradition Award

This year’s awards will see the addition of a new element – the Radio 2 Folk Awards Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame will recognise the special contribution of an individual to the world of folk music; someone whose impact and influence has had a lasting impression.

The first entrant to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is Cecil Sharp – widely regarded as being a key figure in having helped lay the foundations for the modern folk revival in the early 20th century.

Miley Cyrus smokes a joint at MTV Europe awards

RELATED NEWS Miley Cyrus shares shower selfie ahead of EMAs Associated Press Mon Nov 11, 2013 9:59 AM

AMSTERDAM — In an unabashed — and likely successful — bid for attention, singer Miley Cyrus smoked a joint on stage and twerked with a dwarf during the MTV Europe Music Awards.

The 20-year old singer also won the Best Video award for her hit song "Wrecking Ball."

Sunday's strong lineup of performers also included Eminem and Katy Perry.

Cyrus opened the space-themed show singing the song "We Can't Stop," while wearing a silver spandex suit and gyrating her buttocks in the move known as twerking.

Marijuana is not legal in the Netherlands, but smokers can't be prosecuted for possession of small amounts and it is sold openly in cafes known euphemistically as "coffee shops."

LADY GAGA And TAYLOR KINNEY Share Adorable Kiss At YouTube Music Awards (VIDEO)

They may not be getting hitched anytime soon (despite all the wedding rumors) and they’re certainly not thinking of babies just yet, but Gaga and Taylor, who have been dating for over two years now, are definitely still going strong.

Recently there have been reports on numerous celebrity gossip websites and magazines that the two had broken up, but the couple squashed those rumors on Sunday when they attended the YouTube Music Awards together and appeared happy and giggly throughout the entire show.

At one point Gaga, who was wearing what appeared to be a set of gross fake teeth, received a sweet kiss from her hunky beau while onlookers cheered and applauded.
