Samuel L Jackson unaware his character in upcoming film is gay

Actor Samuel L Jackson has admitted that he did not realise his character in an upcoming film adaptation of the Stephen King novel, Cell, is gay.

Jackson, 64, was asked in an interview with the New York Post about the sexuality of one of the novel's central characters, Tom McCourt, an engineer and former soldier who flees Boston when mobile phone signals start to infect people's minds.

"I have no idea. I haven't read the book. Is that character gay in the book?" Jackson said.

This is the first time Jackson has portrayed a homosexual. He previously told Playboy magazine that he would "probably never dress up as a woman and kiss another guy".

There is no suggestion, however, that the actor would be unwilling to portray a homosexual. He was one of a number of Hollywood actors who lobbied against a law banning same-sex marriage in California in 2009.

Jackson will again star alongside John Cusack after the pair worked together on 1408, another horror film adapted from a Stephen King novel. Tod Williams will direct Cell, with production due to begin in January 2014.
