Kristin Davis to make West End debut

Kristin Davis, best known for playing prim New Yorker Charlotte in the HBO series Sex and the City, and its two spin-off films, will make her West End debut this March.

The actress will join the cast of Fatal Attraction, a stage version of the hit 1987 film, which centres on an extra-marital affair gone terrifyingly wrong.

Davis will play wronged wife Beth Gallagher, joining Mark Bazeley, who will play her cheating husband Dan Gallagher, and Natascha McElhone, who will star as obsessive femme fatale Alex Forrest – a part made famous by Glenn Close in the original film.

Rehearsals begin today and Davis is looking forward to getting started. Speaking to the London Evening Standard, she revealed that acting in the West End has always been one of her ambitions. “I definitely grew up thinking what I would do was theatre. And for anyone who has dreamed of doing theatre, the West End is right up there,” she said. “From a historical point of view, it's more important than Broadway — Broadway is exciting and I’ve done that. It’s the culmination of any theatre geek’s dream.”

The play, which will be directed by Trevor Nunn, opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 25 March and will run until June 21.

Henning Mankell reveals cancer diagnosis

Henning Mankell has revealed in a newspaper column that he has cancer.

The Swedish author, playwright and Left-wing activist is best known for his 12 novels about disillusioned detective, Kurt Wallander, which have been made into a TV series in both his native Sweden, and in Britain, where Kenneth Branagh took the starring role.

Writing in Sweden's Göteborgs-Posten newspaper, Mankell explained that he had visited an orthopaedic surgeon in Stockholm in the New Year, as he believed he had a slipped disc. Doctors instead found tumours in his lung and neck, and fear the disease may have already spread elsewhere.

"When I came back to Gothenburg the next day I did it with a serious cancer diagnosis," Henning wrote. "I have no particular memories of the trip home, except for the indelible gratitude I feel for Eva Bergman, my wife, who was with me."

65-year-old Mankell is now close to starting treatment and has announced that he intends to document his experiences, saying: "Very early I decided to try to write about this, because it is ultimately about the pain and suffering that afflicts so many people

Lady Gaga announces UK tour dates

Lady Gaga has announced the European dates of her 2014 worldwide artRave: The ARTPOP Ball tour.

The 21-date tour includes four UK performances, as well as one further concert in Ireland. Kicking off on September 23 in Antwerp, the Poker Face singer will play at venues across Europe including Amsterdam, Prague and Paris, before concluding the tour in Lisbon on November 10.

The 27-year-old arrives in Britain on October 15 when she plays at Birmingham's NIA Arena. Gaga will then perform at Dublin (October 17), Glasgow (October 19), Manchester (October 21) and London (October 23).

Lady Gaga released her fourth studio album, Artpop, last year. It debuted at number one in both the UK and US charts, selling some 258,000 copies across America in its first week of release.

Celine Dion's island château on sale for £16.2 million

You'd be forgiven for thinking that singer Celine Dion's Normandy-style château dates back to the French Revolution. Not so. On the market for £16.2 million, this handsome four-storey palace was built only 13 years ago, in 2001. And while it does stand on an island, it is in the middle not of the River Loire, but of the River Mille Iles in Quebec.

Mind you, it is a private island (Ile Gagnon) that you have to cross a gated bridge to enter, and while the house itself is big, at 24,000 square, the rest of the grounds are grassy and forested and measure 830,000 square feet. Naturally, there are security arrangements in place, to deter the more over-devoted fans.

Inside, the house has six bedrooms, a panelled library, a vaulted wine cellar and a dining room that sits 18. There's also a gym, a games room, and, outside, a pool and pool house equipped with its own kitchen. Many of the floors are made of either marble or wood. This offers the home's new owners the chance to hear their voices reverberate in the same way as the celebrated Canadian songbird's probably does at present.

The Jump: Melinda Messenger forced to withdraw from TV show

Melinda Messenger has become the latest casualty on Channel 4's winter sports show The Jump, after being forced to drop out as a result of concussion.

The former model suffered a blow to the head as she was practising for a bobsleigh event and she has pulled out of the competition on medical advice.

Just yesterday socialite Henry Conway withdrew after breaking a bone in his hand and X Factor-winner Joe McElderry replaced him on the series, which is being filmed in Innsbruck, Austria.

Celebrities have been learning a series of difficult and dangerous skills on the ice and snow and viewers have seen the two bottom-placed contestants each night fighting for their place in the competition by tackling a ski jump.

A spokeswoman for the programme said: "After weeks of training for The Jump, Melinda Messenger has had to pull out of the competition after suffering from concussion following bobsleigh training a few days ago.

"It had been hoped that she would recover quickly enough to continue in the show but, as she hasn't been able to train on medical advice, she sadly had to withdraw."

Investigative journalist Donal MacIntyre has now been called up to replace her. Viewers had already seen him beaten by McElderry to become Conway's replacement but he has now been given a lifeline and will join the show from tomorrow.

MacIntyre said: "I'm tremendously excited about joining the show; it's my most dangerous mission yet."

Tonight's edition of The Jump will see the remaining four women – Anthea Turner, Sinitta, Kimberly Wyatt and Laura Hamilton – competing in the giant slalom ski race.

Until now the participants have been in all-male and all-female contests but when MacIntyre joins from tomorrow, the entire field will be battling against each other.

Last night viewers saw Sir Steve Redgrave take part in the jump-off but he retained his place in the show, seeing off former cricketer Darren Gough.

Pop star Justin Bieber is expected to go to a Toronto police station today to be formally charged with assaulting a limousine driver last December.

Canadian public broadcaster CBC said Bieber had been to the city on December 29 and was coming back from watching a hockey game when police were called to intervene in an altercation.

A police official said Bieber was expected to turn himself in to face an assault charge.

The official said the charge has to do with an alleged assault on a limo driver in December.

Toronto police said in December they were looking into allegations that a member of Bieber's entourage assaulted a limo driver who was driving the Canadian pop star and several others. Police said at the time that it was unclear whether Bieber was involved.

If true, it is the latest problem for the 19-year-old heartthrob after his home in Los Angeles was searched in connection with an alleged egging of his neighbour's house, and his arrest in Miami for drag racing and impaired driving.

Bieber today pleaded not guilty in to charges of Driving Under the Influence, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license in Florida.

News of the Canadian charges comes as a petition asking the Obama administration to deport Canadian pop star passed the 100,000-signature mark needed to require a White House response.

The petition so far has collected about 118,000 signatures since being added by user "J.A. from Detroit" to the White House website on Jan. 23, the same day Bieber was caught drag racing on a residential street in Miami Beach in a rented Lamborghini.

However, it is highly unlikely that Bieber, 19, would be deported, as federal law dictates that a visa could be revoked or denied for a conviction of a violent crime with a one year, or longer, prison sentence.

Bieber told police after his arrest that he had taken prescription medicine, had been smoking marijuana and had consumed alcohol. If convicted, he could face up to six months in jail, although experts say he will likely get off with a lighter sentence for his first offence.

A spokesman for the singer declined to comment on the petition or say which kind of visa Bieber holds to reside in the United States.

Hugh Grant Has a Secret Love Child?!

Splash News It seems the father of two is actually a father of three! The paper reports that Swedish TV executive Anna Elisabet Eberstein gave birth to Grant’s son in September 2012 (three months before he and girlfriend Tinglan Hong welcomed son Felix).

News broke of Eberstein and the baby after Anna re-registered the child’s birth certificate in December 2013, and included the star’s full name… Hugh John Mungo Grant. No father was named on the original certificate.

Hugh’s family life has been a bit complicated the last few years.

He waited months to tell the world he had become a father for the first time, eventually announcing in November 2011 that he had a “fleeting affair” with Hong and was now the proud papa of a daughter named Tabitha.

The relationship apparently turned into more, because the couple then welcomed son Felix in December 2012. The Sun was unsure if Tinglan and TV exec Anna knew about each other.

A source told the paper, “Anna is being supported by Hugh all the way. She lives in a very comfortable property in West London and knows that Hugh is there for her.”

The insider added, “Anna’s parents in Sweden know all about the relationship and she has their blessing.”

At the time of Felix’s birth, Hugh tweeted, “In answer to some journos. Am thrilled my daughter now has a brother. Adore them both to an uncool degree. They have a fab mum.”

Dame Helen Mirren, the Oscar-winning actress, is to be honoured by Bafta with its highest award.

The actress will be presented with a Bafta Fellowship at this year's awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, on Sunday February 16.

Other recipients of the prestigious award include Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Sir Laurence Olivier, Elizabeth Taylor, Stanley Kubrick and Dame Judi Dench. Last year, it went to Sir Alan Parker.

Dame Helen said: ''This is the greatest professional honour I can imagine, certainly one I never dreamt of as a schoolgirl in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. To join that list of legendary names is overwhelming.''

John Willis, chairman of BAFTA, said: “Dame Helen Mirren receives the Fellowship as one of the most outstanding actresses of her generation.

"Dame Helen’s incredibly successful career is testament to the determination, dedication and skill she brings to each of her roles.”

Her career, which has included critically-acclaimed roles in Prime Suspect and The Madness Of King George, has seen her win four Baftas, with a further seven nominations to her name.

She won the best actress Oscar in 2006 for playing the title role in The Queen.

The annual Fellowship award is the highest accolade bestowed by the Academy upon an individual "in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, television or games".

A spokeswoman for Bafta said Dame Helen's career "is a model of how to balance box office success with critical acclaim", with films including Calendar Girls, Red and Monster’s University to The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Gosford Park and The Last Station.

She also forged a career in television, winning three Baftas for her role as Jane Tennison in the Prime Suspect series.

The mini series Elizabeth I, in which she played the titular role, was awarded a BAFTA, three Golden Globes and nine Emmys.

The EE British Academy Film Awards will take place on 16 February at The Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden, hosted by Stephen Fry.

Simian Ghost, who received international acclaim for their second album, Youth, are back with a new single, Echoes of Songs.

Echoes of Songs, taken from the album, The Veil, is a tribute to singer Trish Keenan of the electro-pop group Broadcast.

Explaining why they dedicated the song to Keenan, the band said: “Broadcast was a band that we have all loved and followed for years. Ever since we got the news about Trish passing we wanted to make some kind of tribute to her.

"During the sessions for The Veil this old song idea came up and we thought it kind of reminded us of Broadcast and I wrote a lyric that is both a humble homage to their music and to her style of writing.”

The three-piece from Sweden released their debut album, Infinite Traffic Everywhere, in 2010.

In 2011 the band toured Sweden and shared stages with the likes of Mount Kimbie, SBTRKT and Niki and the Dove, as well as releasing their Lovelorn EP.

Whereas Lovelorn, a wonderfully understated but primarily electronic record, was in Sebastian’s words "a collection of songs all conceived in my messy living room, very DIY”, the follow-up Youth was very much more of a full band affair.

Reflecting their live presence, the guitars came back and the result is a stylish coming together of all the debut’s promise with added sophistication and maturity.

I spend about half the year leading riding and adventure holidays to far-flung places such as Afghanistan and Mongolia with the adventure company Wild Frontiers. Weekends on these trips don’t bear any resemblance to what I call normality back in Britain, so although they’re often exciting I’ll have to discount them from my perfect weekend.

This would start on a Friday night in the pub. My favourite is the Royal Oak in Yattendon, close to where I live near Pangbourne, Berkshire, and I like going there with friends for dinner and a few beers.

'Sex comes into every evaluation of a woman', says Jon Snow

Jon Snow has admitted he thinks about sex every time he meets a woman for the first time and ponders “what could be”.

The Channel 4 News host insisted it was “natural” for men to think of all women as potential sexual partners.

He claimed men were “defined by women”.

In an interview with the London Evening Standard, the broadcaster said: “Sex comes into every evaluation of a woman, there’s no doubt about it. It’s there.

“Well I’m not saying it is a problem at all, it’s rather a delicious thing really, ‘what might have been’ or ‘what could be’.”

He labelled it a “natural animal element of sustaining life” but added: ““I’m sure it plays a different role in different men’s personas.”

The 66-year-old, whose wife Precious Lunga is 27 years his junior, disclosed he had a teenage affair with a librarian almost twice his age while studying at Scarborough Tech, despite describing himself as a “slow developer” both academically and with girls.

He said: “I was warned off by my lecturer, who told me I was very unwise to be seen going off in the lunch hour in the librarian’s car.”

Snow was speaking ahead of chairing a discussion about fatherhood at the Being a Men festival in London.

He expressed concerns about “how many men will bother to turn up”, claiming men would rather talk about women than discuss their own sex.

Being a man is “all about women”, he said.

“We are defined by women: they give birth to us and then they define us, although lots try to ignore it.”

The newsreader, who has worked with a string of high profile women including former ITN anchor Julia Somerville, 66, and former Channel 4 reporter Samira Ahmed, 45, who quit in 2011 claiming that bosses had treated her in a sexist manner, admitted he could have done more to support gender equality in the workplace.

He said: “While I aspire to be a feminist, I think I am guilty of just as many failings in terms of supporting women’s equality.

“I couldn’t say I’d really fought for women to enjoy many of the fantastic benefits I’ve enjoyed. In my career I’ve seen plenty of examples of women not given the same opportunities.”

He says many female colleagues had sacrificed careers when they had children while others lost out on children because of their jobs.

Now said: “Television has an undue quantity of women who don’t have children.

“They are less likely to advance someone with children.

“It’s beyond imagination to think that an employer would say, ‘You’re going to have a third child? My dear, it doesn’t matter at all.’

“Men don’t have to face that - ever.”

Snow, who was briefly engaged to fellow ITN journalist Anna Ford, 70, before going on to have two children with former partner Madeleine Colvin, 64, claims his 39-year-old wife has an older “mental age” than him.

He said: “She’s somewhere in her forties. She’s very, very mature. I mean, she’s a serious boffin.’

Martin Carthy, one of folk's most celebrated figures, will receive a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

The 72-year-old singer from Hatfield, Hertfordshire, will be honoured at a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on February 19. The celebrated Celtic band Clannad will also receive a lifetime award.

Carthy is a master of the ballad of substance, songs that tell stories, whether they are traditional, his own or from contemporary writers. Clannad comprises siblings Moya, Ciaran and Pol Brennan, and their twin uncles Noel and Padraig Duggan. They have sold more than 15 million records since release of their eponymous debut in 1973. Towards the end of the seventies they recruited their younger sister on piano and harmony vocals. She worked on two albums and embarked on several tours with them before going on to establish her own highly successful solo career as Enya. They are well known for the ‘Theme From Harry’s Game’, ‘In A Lifetime’, ‘I Will Find You’ and the soundtrack to the 1984 Robin of Sherwood television series.

Martin Simpson, Anais Mitchell, Bellowhead, Suzanne Vega, Jefferson Hamer, The Fisherman's Friends and The Full English will perform at the Albert Hall awards, which will also honour the Cambridge Folk Festival, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, with the Good Tradition Award

This year’s awards will see the addition of a new element – the Radio 2 Folk Awards Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame will recognise the special contribution of an individual to the world of folk music; someone whose impact and influence has had a lasting impression.

The first entrant to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is Cecil Sharp – widely regarded as being a key figure in having helped lay the foundations for the modern folk revival in the early 20th century.

It's three days before Black Friday, but unfortunately, Harry Styles had to deal with comparable crowds as he tried to get some shopping done in New York City on Tuesday (November 26).

The One Directioner wore a brown jacket and dark skinnies as he made his way through admirers to check out Saint Laurent.

That morning, the guys appeared on "Good Morning America" in Central Park for a live interview and performance.

Squashing rampant rumors, when asked who was single, Harry quickly raised his hand. Lately, reports have come out that the young boy bander was dating Kendall Jenner, but he is now denying the allegation.

Emmy-award winning actor Alec Baldwin's late-night talk show on US cable TV news network MSNBC has been cancelled.

The talk show, "Up Late with Alec Baldwin," was suspended earlier this month after the actor apologised for comments he made to a New York photographer that a gay rights group described as homophobic.

"We are jointly confirming that 'Up Late' will not continue on MSNBC," the network and Baldwin's representative Matthew Hiltzik in a joint statement.

"This is a mutual parting and we wish Alec all the best," MSNBC added.

The show's viewership fell 40 percent from the 654,000 who watched its premier in mid-October to 395,000 when it was suspended in mid-November, according to Nielsen ratings compiled by Horizon Media.

Alec Baldwin's TV show suspended for fortnight

In a video posted on celebrity website TMZ.com, Baldwin is shown confronting the photographer on a New York street and calls him a homophobic slur that drew the ire of gay rights group GLAAD, which has previously defended the actor when he was accused of homophobic language.
